In My Kitchen …. August 2014

Facebook cover page

Fig Jam & Lime Cordial (cute name don’t you think?) each month kindly links to other blog posts about what’s going on in their kitchen.  I thought it was a lovely idea and so am joining in this month, hello Fig Jam & Lime Cordial.

In the BE&S Kitchen this week……I have a little corner of special things

“Sunny” is the thong painting my creative girl made in Kindergarten for the school art show, so proud of her!   The kitchen was very, very white when we finished renovating it 2 years ago so it needed some “pops” of colour, still does a bit!

I have been trying to get the recipe right for these gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free (that’s a mouthful!)  Chai Tea Biscuits  for a while now and I think I just about am there with today’s version.  I’m taking them to “book club” for the ladies tonight.

I love my cutlery set on the wall (the bay leaves are in need of replenishing though!).  Last year a few girlfriends & I went on a memorable trip to Bali and we found these in Seminyak in the Hobo Store, I managed to bring them home as hand luggage.  I pretty much wanted to bring everything from that shop home, gorgeous!  All the gorgeous yellow things in this photo were 40th birthday presents – definitely some good things come when you start on that slippery slope and I’m very grateful to have such lovely, generous friends too (40th birthday wasn’t all kitchen related!).

I had a “date” night with my Mum and Mother-in-Law on Saturday night (whoo – hoo!) while the rest of the family went off to the rugby final so it was a perfect time to try this “posh pizza”, Beetroot & Feta Filo Pizza from this months “Delicious” magazine .  I used Goats cheese rather than the mozzarella but it was ‘delicious’ and I will definitely be pulling that one out again.

We had this for dinner during the week…..Grilled Salmon & Veggie Skewers, rice vermicelli and kale chips it’s a quick, easy, healthy mid week dinner.

The girls school had a fund raising Trivia Night the other week and in a moment of madness I thought it would be a good idea to donate a weeks worth of “lunch box treats” as a Silent Auction prize. Of course the person who won it has 4 kids, so it’s been a very busy week baking!

These are my very easy to make Pear, Banana & Cranberry Muffins I them made for yesterdays instalment.

This cupboard is a design feature I really like in our kitchen, not the mess inside but the way it hides the kettle & toaster when we are not using them (and the mess).  In my dream home I would have a butlers pantry but, as that is really in my dreams, this is a handy alternative I think. Open up the bi-fold doors and and the kettle & toaster are on a pull out shelf with everything you need to go with them above.  I had to tidy up the “tea shelf” to take the photo – every time I opened the cupboard lately I got hit on the head with a box of tea so it was a good time to sort it out.  Teas seem to mate and multiply in our house, does that happen in yours?

Once we’ve done with the kettle & toaster we close up the doors and nobody needs to know what lurks behind!

Cauliflower Mash is my favourite side dish at the moment, we are having it a lot.  Have you tried it?

Avocado Pesto was whizzed up today while my sick girl was sleeping to be used on tonights Chicken Pesto Pasta and then

to entice her to eat I made Mini pesto, beef patty and cheese burgers for lunch using up the left overs from last nights meatballs.

Finally, the Blueberry Chia Seed Jam I made last week was such a hit I had to make it again.

So that is a quick tour of Boiled Eggs & Soldiers kitchen this week.

Anything take your fancy?

Welcome to IMK! I have a similar cupboard to hide the appliances (and mess). Definitely a design feature. I wish I had someone to make me a cute lunch when I was sick

Very yellow! I love the cutlery set too. We have plenty of beetroot at the moment, so I think I may have to try the beetroot and feta pizza as it looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.

Vicki, what a lovely place your kitchen is, thanks for sharing it with us! Your daughter’s artwork is wonderful, and I love all the “pops” of colour you’ve added – especially the yellow KitchenAid! The filo pizza sounds very delicious, and love your “tidy up” cupboard. And yes, I think our teas are reproducing as well – there’s always so many packets here!
