Steamed Salmon with an orange sauce, quick, easy and a little bit fancy for a mid week dinner!


After the meat fest that was our weekend I wanted something clean and healthy and for dinner – also needed some brain food!  We have a quite a bit of salmon around here but I tend to stick to my tried and tested ways so was keen to try something a bit more adventurous but still quick & easy.  I came across a recipe for Burnt Orange Sauce in a  Womans Weekly cookbook that inspired me to make this refined sugar free adaptation.

The recipe will feed 4 easily and only takes 25 minutes from start to the table.

Any left overs you could use for a salad the next day, if you wanted to!

Steamed Salmon with an orange sauce,asparagus, vegies & kale chips

  • 1 orange
  • 1/4 C rice malt syrup
  • 1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 4 salmon fillets
  • bunch of asparagus
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • 1/2 head cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 4 - 5 kale leaves


  1. If doing kale chips preheat the oven to 180 C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Grate 1 tsp of zest from the orange and juice it so you have 1/4 C of juice
  3. Put rice malt syrup and orange juice in a small saucepan and heat, stirring occasionally and bring to the boil. Simmer, uncovered for about 2 - 3 minutes so that it begins to thicken.
  4. Turn the heat down to low and add the zest and stir through, remove from heat and stir in the vinegar. Set aside
  5. Meanwhile, steam the fish and vegies in your choice of steamer. I have a steamer oven so I put the fish in on 100 C for 10 minutes and added the asparagus, broccoli & cauliflower after 5 minutes. If you have a bamboo steamer set it over a large saucepan of simmering water, steam for 15 minutes adding the vegies for the last 8 - 10.
  6. For the kale chips drizzle them with olive oil and a good few grinds of sea salt and place in the oven for 10 minutes, turning once.
  7. When everything is cooked plate up and drizzle the salmon with the orange sauce
