“Shamrock Smoothie” going green & healthy for St Patricks Day & a chat about Matcha

If you are going to be celebrating St Patricks Day today this “Shamrock Smoothie” might be better for you tomorrow morning as it’s jam packed full of antioxidants and goodness that will make you feel great!  There is nothing really Irish about this smoothie other than it being bright green but we like to “theme” things around here and today is as good a day as any to introduce a new green smoothie to the repertoire!

So, in making this I used matcha powder for the first time.  Do you know it?  What do you think?  If you haven’t used it before Matcha is a green tea powder that is made by grinding down the whole leaf.  Apparently one serve of matcha powder is the equivalent of 10 cups of regular green tea – that’s what the packaging says anyway.  Green tea gets a good rap in terms of health benefits and matcha powder even more so – supposedly it assists with focus & brain function (yes please), boosts energy and metabolism (yes, yes please), promotes detoxification and supports a healthy immune systems (again yes please!).  (This site gives some more blurb but please note that they are bias as they sell the powder).  I got my powder from “About Life” but it’s sold in all good health food stores.

Enough of the nutrition lesson?  Here’s the recipe:

“Shamrock Smoothie”

1 minute

2 smoothies

  • 2 kale stems, leaves only
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 lemon, juice only
  • 1/2 pear, seeds removed
  • 1 Tbsp matcha powder
  • handful of ice
  • 1 C (250 g) coconut water
  • 1 C (250 g) water

  1. Put kale, cucumber, avocado, lemon juice, pear, matcha powder and ice in the blender or Thermomix and blitz to break down the fruit Speed 9 / 10 seconds in Thermo. Scrape sides.
  2. Add coconut water and water and blend speed 9 / 1 minute

Do you do green smoothies?  Have you used matcha?  What in? Are you celebrating Paddy’s Day?

I love green smoothies and have one for breakfast most days. I whizz up frozen banana, mango, apple, cucumber and spinach in the thermomix and it’s all kinds of delicious. Even my veggie-fruit-o-phobe of a husband will drink it!
