In My Kitchen – April 2016

In My Kitchen March

Hi, welcome to my monthly round up of what’s been going on “In My Kitchen” which I do as part of a series hosted by some fabulous foodies from all around the world.  This month has been less busy in my actual kitchen in regards to creating anything new but has been busy finishing off the renovation and trying out other people’s delicious recipes too!

The house is finally at the stage where we can entertain guests and we’ve been enjoying having people over for Sunday afternoon “Sunday Sips”! In the photo above the watermelon, fetta & mint little sticks went down well, so easy to make and you just drizzle some balsamic over them before serving for extra taste.

Also to help us with Sunday Sips were the Vinomofo wines that I was sent (and reviewed here) I really liked them and have signed up to their wine club now!  I think we could all do with some more Bisou Bisou in our lives (it means kiss, kiss in French!).  Have you heard of them before?

I didn’t make my own hot cross buns this year but I did make these spelt & cranberry “hot buns” that were extra delicious as I made them on a day where we actually had rain so I pretended that it was cooler, ate them straight from the oven with slatherings of butter and lovely tea. The view from the kitchen window was extra green. I love the enamel mug that Cathy of Pergrination Gourmande gave to me as well, so cute.

This is my view from the other direction from my kitchen bench.

My dining table in my kitchen

Most of our things are from our Sydney home that we shipped up with us but the tropical flowers (Ornamental Ginger & Birds of Paradise) were from the local growers markets and my cutlery set was from a trip to Bali a few years ago.

I hadn’t got any new cookbooks for a while as I was trying to declutter in the move and gave away loads but now that we are getting a bit more settled a couple I was interested in happened to make their way back with my husband after a recent work trip to the UK.

Deliciously Ella cook books

I’ve been following Ella Woodward on Instagram (Deliciously Ella) and love the look of her food even though I’m neither vegan, gluten or sugar free.  She makes it all look and sound so good I’m slowly making my way through some of her recipes and they are delicious.  I wonder if I would have that gorgeous glow if I was vegan, diary, gluten and sugar free?

I also picked up a sweet little milk jug just to add to the collection of “props” and of course to use with tea (I would find it difficult to be dairy free I think, how about you?).

Breakfast time is always a rush in our house during term time, so I made these “On the Go” Breakfast Bars that are made with my granola and puffed rice (Rice Bubbles also work well in it) you can literally eat them on the go.

Breakfast Bars

A lovely new friend Meg visited us while we were on Magnetic Island last week and brought limes from her garden.  I love her ribbons and labels not to mention the limes which went down well in sundowner G&Ts!

Megs Limes

We also celebrated Easter on the Island which meant lots of chocolate eggs and bunnies but also some homemade Scottish Shortbread that was handed out at a family Christening. (Made by the babies Scottish Grandfather no less).

More cute stickers, it must be a “thing”.

This Bean Salad was amazing and made in our holiday kitchen by my friend Tracey.  The recipe will be on the blog soon as is so good it has to be shared. There was curry powder in the dressing that took it to another level.

Tracey's bean salad

Dragonfruit are still in season here so I loved trying out Pretty Wee Things Dragonfruit Smoothie recipe.  It’s been on high rotation in our house ever since.

There are still loads and loads of Easter Eggs in my kitchen but that is about all for now from me.  Please pop on over to Maureen at The Orgasmic Chef who is kindly hosting In My Kitchen and check out some or all of the fabulous  In My Kitchen posts from around the world.  You just never know the tidbits of information you may find out and I love a peek into others kitchens, don’t you?

As it’s Tuesday I’m also linking up with #IBOT at Essentially Jess, you will find all sorts of things to read about there too.

What’s been going on in your kitchen this month?

Oh so much deliciousness! The Vinomofo wines were a big hit here too – we’re putting our order in today! And I’m loving the view from your kitchen bench, I can’t wait for the big reveal!

Thanks Sammie – I’ve just got another case of Bisou Bisou! I need to do a big tidy up before the “beg reveal” the bench has become a dumping ground!

I adore “Deliciously Ella”. She has such fantastic, simple recipes. And I am in love with your dining room. You are done such an incredible job decorating. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest. xx

Hi Liz, I adore her recipes too. Thank you for the compliments too, I’ve enjoyed the decorating part if not so much the building!!

OMG everything in your house is to-die for. Particularly that marble benchtop….

Thanks Hugzy. I went for a composite stone rather than real marble – too high maintenance (and expensive) this way the kids (including husband) are actually allowed in the kitchen!

I could definitely not go dairy free. But those books do look good, I hadn’t heard of her before (Ella, that is).

She beams out good health but I still couldn’t be dairy free ( as I scoff down some chocolate too!).

Is it OK if I move in? My kitchen has been somewhat, nope totally un-inspirational this month, well lets face it, for months! I’ll find my mojo again, just got to be bothered to look for it! 🙂

My mojo has gone a bit awol too but I feel it coming back – I hope!

I’m pretty sure giving up dairy, meat and sugar wouldn’t make me look 3 years younger let alone 30 years. And I’d never give up my glass of wine in the evening. I’m obviously doomed! Love the yellow and white colour scheme you have going on in your kitchen. You always have lots of delicious food on the go up in the tropics.

Thanks Nancy I couldn’t give it all up either but I’m loving the recipes when I do make them (with wine in hand!).

Yay please come, we are open for visitors! Builder has Ross River Fever so no work for weeks now, I feel bad for him as it sounds awful but we’ve only got about 2 days work on the house for it to all be finished so I can’t wait for him to get better!

Sunday Sips sounds so civilised and looks delicious! After reading Kylie Purtell’s post I’ve already decided to have more regular family gatherings and maybe Sunday Sips with the extended family is the way to start.

Those dragonfruit smoothies looks extra delicious. All your food pics look great and your kitchen/dining area looks fab too. Sounds like you are embracing life in the tropics (isn’t Magnetic Island the best).

Magnetic Island is beautiful. I’m still getting used to the tropics but have to make the best of it while we are here and all the tropical fruit is amazing.

You are so refreshing with your statements about not becoming this-free or that-free. Common sense!
