The French Fizz – a gin & tonic cocktail with lemon & sage

French Fizz G&T

As I’m playing catch up with my Gin & Tonic challenge and the fact that tomorrow is World Gin Day I thought the version for May’s belated contribution to the challenge should be a little bit fancy and that’s where “The French Fizz” comes in. It’s French because of the St. Germain and champagne but you could just as easily use Prosecco and call it The Italian Fizz instead. Given I created my version in North Queensland  we can also call it the Tropical Fizz, whatever floats your boat and I think that this cocktail will do just that!

I saw a version of this on Buzz Feed some time ago & haven’t been able to find it since but thought it was about time I gave it a try. It uses St Germain Elderflower liqueur (sold in most bottleshops) which is so good but if you can’t get your hands on that, Elderflower cordial from the supermarket will do the trick too. The lemon & sage give it a botanical taste and really makes it different from you standard G&T.

This is a great cocktail to serve up as an appertif when friends are around for dinner and if you have non gin lovers a splash of St Germain in some bubbles goes down a treat too.

Its very simple to make;

You need:

St Germain Liqueur or Elderflower cordial

Tonic Water

Champagne or Prosecco

Sage Leaf

What you do:

Put a splash of St. Germain or Elderflower cordial in the bottom of a glass. Add the sage leaf and lemon and gently “bruise” to release some flavour.

Add 30 ml gin ( or another “splash”

Add some ice

Pour equal parts tonic & champagne to top up the glass

Cheers & enjoy!

While the cocktail is a little bit fancy you really can enjoy it on any occasion! Like on your front deck admiring the view on a Saturday afternoon….

    Magnifique! This reminds me of a drink our French friend Cathy made when she came over, it definitely had elderflower too. I might have to give this a go with Prosecco (and I’m a poet and I know it!)
